Lillian Lien, MD is Medical Director for Duke Hospital Inpatient Diabetes Management, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition, and a faculty member of Duke University’s Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition and Metabolism Center.  Dr. Lien also completed Internal Medicine Residency and Endocrinology Fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center.   She has long had an interest in quantitative research, beginning with her undergraduate work at Harvard University in Biomedical Engineering. Throughout her career, she has devoted her efforts to clinical research. In 2001, she received the Barton Haynes Research Support Award for her innovative work in optimizing the safe administration of intravenous insulin. Her research interests lie in the field of obesity and metabolism with a focus on metabolic syndrome,  adipocytokines, and insulin resistance. She also received the 2006 Haynes Early Career Research Grant for junior faculty in the Duke Department of Medicine and was nominated for the 2008 Eugene Stead Dept. of Medicine Faculty Teaching Award.
 
She is a key investigator on local and national obesity - metabolic studies including: the STEDMAN Project (Study of the Effect of Diet on Metabolism And Nutrition), the Weight Loss Maintenance Clinical Trial, and the MURDOCK Horizon1 obesity project, which aims toward an innovative understanding of the biology of obesity and weight loss. In 2008, she also became Medical Director of Duke Inpatient Diabetes. Due to her above interests and experience, she has published in both the fields of obesity and inpatient diabetes management.
